Teaching Philosophy
Our classrooms will foster “High Quality Student Work”; putting less emphasis on the amount of material covered and memorized and more on making connections, thinking through issues, and solving problems. Learning will concentrate more on the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy (applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating). We want our students to be reflective leaders of their own learning, supporting them to produce high-quality work as they complete their daily learning activities, set individualized goals, create projects, and author presentations. Through our teaching, we target the traits of self-assessment, creativity, collaboration, effective communication skills, and critical thinking. Our approach to student learning encompasses characteristics from Differentiated Instruction, 21st Century Learning, Project Based Learning, and Expeditionary Learning. Through all aspects of school living and learning, it is our vision to equip students to “learn, grow and live in the Light of Christ.”

John Knox Christian School cultivates a warm, faith-centered community where Christian values are woven intentionally throughout daily learning and school life. The school comprises over 230 students from more than 35 different Christian denominations, creating what the school describes as a diverse, vibrant environment. Beyond academics, the community celebrates student growth through musical performances, science fairs, athletic competitions, and service projects. Families describe the atmosphere as nurturing and welcoming, with caring teachers who encourage each child to explore their unique potential both in and out of the classroom.
Diversity & Inclusion
John Knox explicitly celebrates its diverse, multi-denominational community as a strength. The school notes that families come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic positions, and Christian denominations—representing Baptist, Anglican, United, Evangelical, Roman Catholic, Marthoma, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, and other traditions. The school states it values this diversity and believes it deepens each child's education as students learn from and alongside one another. While originally founded by Dutch Christian Reformed families in 1959, those families now comprise only 25% of the school population.
Parent Involvement
John Knox emphasizes parent involvement through its GIFTS Parent Involvement Program, which operates via the OnVolunteers portal. Families are expected to complete 20 hours of service annually (valued at $25 per hour, totaling $500), or opt out by paying an additional fee on their tuition invoice. Parents track their volunteer hours through dedicated login credentials in the OnVolunteers system. The school also encourages families to volunteer at the Encore Thrift Store, though those hours cannot be credited toward GIFTS requirements. Regular school communication shares specific involvement opportunities throughout the year.
